I Love to Read Month – Special Events / Activities

I Love to Read Month Kick-off Assembly

At this assembly we will introduce our I Love to Read theme by reading one of our Forest of Reading Blue Spruce Award books, That’s Not Hockey, and then we’ll enjoy sharing a book together in our MUGG groups.  Each MUGG leader will choose a Canadian picture book to read with their group in their regular meeting spot. Please feel free to read one of our Forest of Reading Blue Spruce Award books with you group or one of the many Canadian books we have in our Library Learning Commons.  We have set aside the books in special bins in our library so that they’re easy to locate.

GOAL: The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of Canadian books and celebrate the richness, diversity and breadth of Canadian literature.

WHEN: February 19th, 2020.

ACTION: We challenge the nation to “Read Canadian” for 15 minutes and to share their experience at their library, in their school, with their families and friends, or on social media Young people are encouraged to read, or be read to, a Canadian book of their choice.

To celebrate we’d like everyone to find 15 minutes in their day to read a Canadian picture book to their students or have your students read a book by a Canadian author.
There will be bins with books by Canadian authors in the staffroom and Library Learning Commons.

I Love to Read Month – Graphing 150 Reading Minutes to Celebrate MB’s 150th Anniversary
Classrooms are encouraged to read together books by Canadian authors and illustrators over the month of February.  We’d like all classes to graph what Canadian books they’ve read over the time period of 150 minutes.  This may seem daunting at first but we estimate this to be approximately 10 - 15 books. We’ve created an 11 x 17 graph for you to record what you’ve read.  We’d like everyone to post their graphs on their door or bulletin board by the last week of February.

I Love to Read Month – 150 Makerspace/Steam Challenge
Another way to celebrate Manitoba’s 150th Anniversary is a Makerspace / STEAM Challenge that involves creating a structure using 150 items.  You can use some of kits in our Makerspace to do this or bring in your own materials for this challenge.  This activity can be done individually, in small groups, or by the whole class.  The possibilities are limitless.

Forest of Reading Blue Spruce Award  (Runs from February – April 2020)
Once again we’ll participate in the Forest of Reading Blue Spruce Award program for I Love to Read Month.  Over the course of the Winter Term, Bairdmore students, will have an opportunity to read all ten picture books from the list.  In April students will vote for their favourite Canadian picture book from the list.  By voting we’ll help determine the winner of the Blue Spruce Award.  Many schools in Pembina Trails School Division, along with schools in Manitoba, Ontario, and Canada participate in this program.

Book Tasting Party with Forest of Reading Blue Spruce Award Books

We thought a fun way of reading some of the Blue Spruce Award books is for classes to have a book tasting party with their reading buddies.  We’ve ordered three copies of each title so would have thirty books available for this event. We’ll be offering a number of opportunities, for classes to come down to the library to do this activity.  A schedule will be posted and you’re invited to sign-up with your class.

Bairdmore Library Learning Commons I Love to Read Month Bulletin Board Challenge
Identify and match the 7 word description of the Blue Spruce Award books to the correct book cover.  Entries will be due by Friday, March 27, 2020

To make it easier for Early Years classes to participate in this activity we’ll make a matching game for each class.  Students will match the book cover with the correct 7 word description of the book.  A class ballot or individual ballots can be filled out and submitted to the Library Learning Commons.
